Unrest in the middle east (Again) watch gold

Posted on June 13, 2014 at 5:27 PM Comments comments (1)
That's right it has happened again. Turmoil in the middle east. The stock market will feel the effect. Just on speculation alone oil prices are creeping up as well as investor anxiety and when this happens investors run and hide into something stable something called gold. I expect a huge run on gold in the next few weeks. So go through your jewelry boxes and get it ready to sell or pawn it here at East Main Jewelry. If you missed the boat last time you might just get your chance now.

What ? are these three numbers on my gold ring?

Ok here is a good one for you. I had a very sharp customer come in with exactly one ounce of 14 kt gold. He looked me in the eye and said "You know gold is $1300 dollars an ounce"

I said yes it is but what you have here sir is only 58.5% gold not 100% gold.
Slightly stunned he realized that I was correct and started to laugh.

Almost always Gold Jewelry is a composition of other metals what is known as an alloy. It is comprised of  gold, copper, silver, platinum, palladium, and zinc. Some metals are added to increase hardness or to change the hue. Hence white gold, rose gold, etc. The reason this is done are many, one of the main reason is pure gold is extremely soft. It is not suited very well for jewelry it bents and dents very easily.

I am sure you have jewelry that has a mysterious three digit number and no other indication of its gold content or Karat. Well here is a little tip that can help you crack the code.

417 is 41.7% gold content or 10kt.
585 is 58.5% gold content or 14kt.
750 is 75% gold content or 18kt
.999 is 100% gold content or 24kt.

I hope this helps you in the future.

Looking for a new tv but your not sure LCD,LED,Plasma?

Ok I have been there and it is confusing ,frustrating , and yes a little scary. When trying to buy the newer tvs out there. We see them come in all the time and here is what we have learned.

Pros: For picture quality and price Plasma televisions The contrast and blacks are very rich.

Cons:power consumption is an issue as opposed to the very efficient lcd,led

LCD (liquid crystal diode)
Pros: All around our favorite low power consumption proven technology reliable
Cons: A little pricey , not as crisp as a plasma

LED (light emitting diode) These are conventional lcd tvs with led back lit screens rather than the florescent back lit lcds.
Pros: A crisp picture and even better power consumption rating
Cons: expensive
We also recommend forgoing the smart tv option because chances are your bluray,or gaming system has that feature already and you can save a buck.

GOLD Drops then Pops why?

A customer came in today and was disappointing we did not offer the same amount for her gold as last time. I simply explained that Gold has dropped considerably since last time you were in and frankly I didn't recognize you. I did however match last years prices to retain her business. We reward customer loyalty.

As you can see from this 10 year graph gold spiked up during the summer of 2013. Then dropped back down the latter half of 2013 right into the present. This is attributed to a strengthening dollar and economy. I am confident you will see another spike in gold prices if unrest in Russia continues or if an unforeseen event occurs in the future to shatter a fragile US recovery but over all I believe the US economy will have a rebound for 2014.

Take a trip down to our shop and I will let you know for free if it is worth something. Chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.... This reel is worth $200 bucks by the way.

A woman came in the store a few years back and told me a horrifying story. She was going through her jewelry box and selected only the "Good" pieces to sell to me. I asked her what happened to the bad pieces?  She said....(I hope your sitting)... "I just tossed them in the trash"... I was stunned. Even though your jewelry is broken, bent, smashed, or you are just sick of it. Please please bring it to us to get some cash for it. It is still worth money.
